Lost Boys: The Tribe

by Movies | 21.7.08 in |

Lost Boys: The Tribe is an upcoming American horror film about a group of teenagers who must confront a band of surfing vampires who inhabit the California coastline. It is the sequel to the successful 1987 film, The Lost Boys, and stars Autumn Reeser, Tad Hilgenbrink, Angus Sutherland, Corey Feldman, Corey Haim, and Jamison Newlander. It will be a direct-to-video release on July 29, 2008 and is directed by P.J. Pesce. It has been rated R by the MPAA for strong vampire violence and gore, language, sexuality and some drug use.

Plot

Lost Boys: The Tribe remains under tight wraps, but the basic plotline was disclosed by Corey Feldman in an interview with MTV: "Once again, you have a fish-out-of-water story of two young folks who move into a new town to visit their relatives and find themselves caught up with a bunch of bloodsuckers. I really like the script because it is very close and very true to the structure of the original film — same kind of scares, same kind of laughs, same kind of relationships."[2]

In a press release in Business Wire, Warner Premier revealed more details about the film: "This sequel takes us to the shady surf city of Luna Bay, California, where vampires quickly dispatch anyone who crosses their path. Into this dark world arrive Chris Emerson (Hilgenbrink) and his younger sister, Nicole (Reeser). Having just lost their parents in a car accident, the siblings move in with their eccentric Aunt Jillian and become new prey for the locals’ way of life. When Nicole unwittingly falls for a local vampire, Chris must locate and destroy the gang’s lifeline before his sister’s transformation is complete; to do this Chris finds himself relying on the expertise of none other than Edgar Frog (Feldman). Subtle references to characters from the original film, and cameos from returning actors offer homage to the Lost Boys legend and set a sinister tone of impending doom."[3]

Development

Plans for a sequel to The Lost Boys had been in varying stage of development since the release of the original film. Director of the original film Joel Schumacher had wanted to do a sequel called The Lost Girls before the announcement of The Tribe, a film in which he has no input in and does not believe should be made.[4] In addition, a script called Lost Boys: Devil May Cry was also considered.

Casting

Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander will be returning as the vampire slaying "Frog Brothers," Edgar and Alan,[6][7] as will Corey Haim as his Sam Emerson character from the original film,[8] who initially was reluctant to participate in the sequel.[9] Newcomer Greyston Holt, as Evan, finds himself up against the vampire horde as he fights to protect the object of his affection, Reeser.[10] Merwin Mondesir, Shaun Sipos, and Kyle Cassie have been cast as the vampires led by Angus Sutherland's character.[11] Moneca Delain has also been added to the cast.[12]

Says Feldman on the film: "Warner Bros. has further developed the script — they brought on a great writer (Hans Rodionoff), who came up with a great story line. And in that script they have included (me), Corey Haim and Jamison Newlander as featured parts in the film. In the script, as it is today, I am one of the leads. My involvement is very close to what my involvement was in the first one. So I'm pretty much scattered throughout. (Edgar) was always an outcast, but here his close-knit family have drifted apart. They've had a major problem, and because of that problem, Edgar today is working alone. The film is about him trying to still carry the torch as it were, without the aid and assistance of his partners. That leaves him in an even lonelier and even more delicate place than he was in the first film being the outsider that he already was."

In an interview with Fangoria, Tom Savini said the following in regards to his role in the film: "I'm one of the first vampires you see in the movie, I'm a surfer who runs into the vampires at the beginning of the film, in a sequence that is shot very Sergio Leone-style. They're shooting THE TRIBE in Vancouver right now, and I'll be there September 11." [13]

Jason Patric, who portrayed Michael in the first film, was rumored to be returning to the role for a small scene in the sequel; however, this was debunked in MTV's August 28 interview with Corey Feldman.[

Production

Production on Lost Boys: The Tribe began in early 2007 and started filming in Vancouver, B.C. in August. Location shooting for the film is rumored to include San Diego and Vancouver, B.C.. Six weeks of production in Squamish and Richmond, outside of Vancouver, will wrap on Sept. 24.[citation needed]

Wildstorm Comics has announced a prequel to the movie, focusing on Edgar and Alan Frog, entitled The Lost Boys: Reign of Frogs. It is a 4-issue miniseries scheduled to begin shipping in May 2008.
